"Truthfulness is not just a virtue; it's a timeless guide illuminating the path of righteousness." - Unknown
While I'd love to confidently say, "If you do 10 minutes of tree pose every day, you will be stress-free forever!" – it's part of the solution, but not the whole picture. As a yoga coach, I cannot, in good conscience, say that it's completely true all by itself, as I would not be practicing Satya (truthfulness) and, therefore, would not be in alignment with the truth.
Like Ahimsa (non-harm), Satya is one of the Yamas or moral principles of yoga and part of the first of the eight limbs of yoga philosophy. Satya is all about truthfulness and authenticity, and when followed, can bring you a sense of lightness, peace, and serenity.
On the mat, practicing Satya could look like being honest about how much or how little you are actually challenging yourself with the poses or practices you are choosing. Are you really pushing yourself, or are you playing it safe?
Off the mat, practicing Satya could look like being honest about how much or how little effort you are actually putting into your work. Are you really challenged by your efforts, or are you just going through the motions? Self-reflection is a great way to get honest with yourself.
Another way to practice Satya is through accepting imperfection. The truth is nothing is actually perfect. There are flaws in everything and everyone. Embrace your flaws and those of others, and you will develop a deeper sense of love and compassion, which will negate stress and unrealistic expectations.
You can also practice Satya through open communication. Instead of breeding negative thoughts and feelings by assuming what someone else is thinking or feeling, compassionately and openly share your feelings and express your concerns. You might just find that your worries were unfounded, and you can make room for what's truly important, like creativity, self-discovery, inner peace, and a calm mind.
Today, try to approach your tasks and daily activities from the perspective of Satya or Truth. See how being honest with yourself and others allows you to feel unburdened, be more authentic and aligned, so that you can stress less and thrive! And don't forget to do some tree pose – it helps too!
